Metropolitan Airpark Master Development Plan and EIR at Brown Field Airport

Metro Airpark Rendering by Gensler

Brown Field Airport involving a 50-year lease from the City of San Diego. Because the project incorporates airport and non-airport uses, it was critical to find a consultant that could successfully navigate the complex environmental and permitting framework for this ambitious project.

ESA’s expertise in airport, community, and environmental planning made us the perfect partner for Metropolitan Airpark LLC. The project includes a jet aviation business center fixed-base operator (FBO), a helicopter business center FBO, an eco-industrial park, a transit center, and mixed commercial, retail, and hotel uses. We prepared the EIR and supporting technical studies for air quality, greenhouse gases, noise, biology, aesthetics, and cultural resources. The project was unanimously approved by the City Council. Before construction begins, ESA is preparing NEPA documentation and assisting with permitting. The presence of wetlands on part of the project site near an active airport requires additional attention. Our team of biologists is preparing a Wildlife Hazard Assessment that thoroughly evaluates wildlife hazards and bird strike impacts to aircraft.

ESA’s integrated approach to master planning on a site rich with complex land uses and natural resource management challenges reassures the Otay Mesa community that the Metropolitan Airpark will be well planned and environmentally sensitive.
